"If necessity is the mother of invention, scientifically developed production is the mother of scientific research".

‌Keeping in mind the above quote by Arthur Edwin Kennelly which highlights the importance of scientific research and innovation, India's premiere research Institute, Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has come forward with a unique degree program -MTech in Defence Technology, which gives more emphasis on research and new technological development for facilitating the needs of the country's defence and Indian Armed Forces.

Let's understand the significance of this MTech degree programme in detail.

In an official statement released by the defence ministry, minister Mr. Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO and AICTE for their collaborative initiative of starting this course for students.

This futuristic educational program was launched on Thursday, 8 July by DRDO Chairman G Satheesh Reddy and AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe in an event conducted virtually.

It's official statement stated -

"A regular MTech programme in defence technology is launched to impart necessary theoretical and practical knowledge, skills & aptitude to the bright minds of India".

We've always wondered why countries like the USA, Israel, China, Korea, etc have such advanced defence technology & warfare tactics.

The answer lies in the fact that in these nations such courses were implemented a long time ago and students are encouraged to pursue it ever since their high school days.

This educational programme is a step inched closer towards achieving the goal of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ i.e making nation self-reliant in every aspect.

Recently, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) limit has been increased to 70% in Defence Investments.

India's dream of becoming an independent nation in terms of developing indigenous defence equipment and new technologies weighs heavily on the success of this educational programme. Thus, having a pivotal role in the Make in India project and also in gaining a competitive edge in defence over it's global counterparts.

Let's take a deeper insight about the curriculum of this MTech programme.

In a virtual event the members of DRDO and AICTE said -

“The programme will act as a source of motivation for aspiring engineers to kick start their career in this newly developed defence technological arena”.

Officials further added that this MTech programme can be conducted at institutes like IITs, NITs or any private engineering colleges throughout India which are affiliated to the AICTE.

Due to the pandemic, the programme will be conducted in online mode as well under the guidance & support of Institute of Defence Scientists and Technologists (IDST) staff.

AICTE said this curriculum is divided into 4 semesters with 80 credits and will be having numerous specialisations.

Education will be in a structured manner & the last two semesters will include dissertation and defence industrial training.

The course will impart the knowledge of several domains like Military Electronics System, combat vehicle engineering, aerospace technology, communication systems and sensors, naval technology & architecture and highly energized materialistic technology to students.

The pandemic has completely changed our education system, but the government's initiative might prove to be a catalyst for improving the ailing research situation of the country.

Our country's youth is crammed with great zeal & passion, ready to rack their minds in the research field and this initiative acts as a booster to channelize their energy for the country's betterment.
