Facial recognition is a method of recognizing or verifying a person's identification by looking at their face. Using facial recognition technology, people can be identified in pictures, films, or in real-time.
Facial recognition is a key component of biometric security. A biometric software program can recognize voices, fingerprints, or iris patterns. There is growing interest in using this technology for other purposes besides security and law enforcement.
How does facial recognition work?
With Face Recognition, people who pass special cameras can be matched to photos of individuals on watch lists, or even unlock their phones. The images can come from anywhere, including our social media accounts, and the watch lists can contain pictures of anyone, including those who are not suspected of any wrongdoing.
Facial technology systems operate in a variety of ways, here are a few examples.
- An examination of the face
A picture of the face is taken and examined. Because it is easier to match a 2D image with public photos or those in a database, most facial recognition technology uses 2D images rather than 3D images. Your face's geometry is read by the software.
- Creating a data file from an image
Based on a person's facial traits, the face capture method converts analog information (a face) into a set of digital information (data). The examination of your face is effectively reduced to a mathematical formula. Faceprint refers to the numerical code. Each person has their own faceprint, similar to how thumbprints are unique.
Where facial recognition is used?
The technology has a wide range of use. We already know about phone unlocking through facial recognition. Here are some more of them:
- The medical industry
Face recognition is being used by healthcare professionals to gain access to patient records, speed registration, detect emotion and discomfort in patients, and even assist to identify specific genetic illnesses.
- Identifying drivers
Automobile manufacturers are experimenting with facial recognition to replace vehicle keys. The technology would take the role of the key to unlock and start the vehicle, as well as remembering the driver's preferences for seat and mirror placements, and also the radio station.
- Locating individuals that have gone missing
Missing people and victims of human trafficking can be identified using facial recognition technology. Assume that a database is created to track down missing people. The risk from facial recognition security
